Judy Onofrio is a sculptor with an international reputation who’s larger than life sculptures are covered with collaged bones, glass orbs, thousands of beads, and intricate glass mosaics. It’s all carefully composed, but her Baroque flourishes celebrate life’s color, matching perfectly with her sense of humor and creative spirit. Judy is a prolific artist who continues to inspire the next generation of artists while championing the outsider and self-taught artists who have inspired her. It is through her accumulative process that Judy continues to push the boundaries of art and craft, especially how she shares the history that objects contain, as she says, “The joy I derive from making art compliments my love for collecting an odd assortment of curios that provoke strong memories.” Her more recent works have the same ambitious scale of her previous work but are inspired by underwater flora and fauna, while reflecting on her childhood and earliest memories of living near the ocean.
Deep Dive is curated by Sioux City Art Center Curator Christopher Atkins and will travel to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum, in Winona, Minnesota, June 2024.
