Every decade since 1980 the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program have co-presented Foot in the Door — the state’s largest art exhibition — showcasing thousands of works of art by artists living in Minnesota. The Foot in the Door exhibitions have become well-established, and eagerly anticipated, celebrations of the diversity and enthusiasm of Minnesota’s visual arts community. This unique exhibition introduced museum audiences to all generations of artists living and working in the state. Anyone who considers themself an artist was encouraged and invited to submit a work of art. The only requirement is that each artwork must fit within a one-foot cube.
In 1980 the first Foot in the Door exhibition featured work by 740 artists. In 1990 The Other Foot in the Door Show grew to include works by nearly 900 artists. And by 2000, the exhibition had become legendary, featuring over 1700 artists, many of whom had participated in the previous two exhibitions. Foot in the Door 4 surpassed all previous exhibitions with 4771 artworks.
